Learn about German Cultural Heritage with the Goethe-Institut Pavilion

  • Take a challenge quiz and learn about the dynamic German cultural heritage of so many Americans; win a prize!

Isolate Your Own DNA at the National Academy of Science's Koshland Science Museum Pavilion

  • See your own DNA! Isolate a sample of genetic material from your cheek cells. You can put it in a vial that can be worn as a necklace to take it home with you.

Play the Patent Puzzler Game, Preview Exhibits, and Learn about the Historical Douments of Our Nation at the National Archives Pavilion.

  • Play the Patent Puzzler Game with the Archive's staff using facsimiles of patents from the Archive’s holdings such as the typewriter, submarine explorer and the pencil.
  • Preview from School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents exhibit at the National Archives and journey back to the school days of 20th century Presidents and find out of if you have something in common with these uncommon men!
  • View facsimiles of important historical documents including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Take home some National Archives giveaways while you’re visiting.

Make Architectural Art at the National Building Museum Pavilion

  • Use tin ceiling pieces to create your own colorful architectural pattern rubbings or use stamps of columns, fences, lampposts, and such to create your own artistic patterns with an architectural flare!

Create a Book at the National Museum of Women in the Arts Pavilion

  • Books are Art! Learn to create book structures such as the accordion fold, the diamond fold, and others with materials from the museum. Then get creative and incorporate stories, poems, decorations, and artwork in your unique artist’s book.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the National Portrait Gallery Pavilion

  • Create a special craft celebrating the rich and vibrant heritage of Hispanic countries in honor of Hispanic Heritage month! While you’re visiting, collect information about upcoming youth and family programming this fall.

  • beginning at 11:30, kids and grownups alike can test their skills with the latest American Art scavenger hunt; follow the clues to find specific artworks among more than 3,300 objects on display. Fun for kids and grown-ups alike!

Create Textile Art at the Textile Museum Pavilion

  • Meet downtown’s newest neighbor, the Textile Museum before they open an annex in Penn Quarter. Then, try your hand at creating textile art – a fun activity for all ages!

Make an Inukshuk at the Canadian Embassy Pavilion

  • Learn the techniques and then make your own Inukshuk – a beautiful stone sculpture traditionally created by the Inuit and used as landmarks in the Arctic. While you’re visiting, talk to our friendly staff who have Canadian tourist and cultural information, as well as information about the Embassy of Canada.

  • Take a short quiz on the arts and culture happening in Downtown to win a prize!

See the Best of the DC Shorts Film Festival

  • See selections from previous competitions, featuring films with genres ranging from animation to sci-fi to comedy to experimental.
  • From 11:00 – 1:00, pick up FREE tickets to the family-friendly film screening at the E Street Cinema. These international shorts are appropriate for children 8 and older!

Make a Cherry Blossom Bowl at the National Cherry Blossom Festival Pavilion

  • Get bowl-ed over by blossoms! Decorate white stoneware bowls with unique cherry blossom designs, stencils will be available for younger artists.

Learn About Making Art in Prison at the Prison Arts Foundation Pavilion

  • View and purchase works of art created by incarcerated artists, and learn about arts programs in prison.
  • From 11:00-3:00, hear a former prisoner discuss the opportunities and obstacles to making art in prison; questions are welcome and free literature on Prison Arts programs will be available.

Compare and Contrast Acrylic and Tempera Paint with Utrecht Art Supplies

  • Experience the difference between permanent acrylic paint and non-permanent tempera paint. Have fun playing with the materials while creating your own works of art to take home.
